What Is
Risk-Based Vulnerability Management
?

Risk-based vulnerability management (RBVM) is an approach to vulnerability management that directs remediation effort by real-world risk, combining threat intelligence, exploitability and business context, instead of trying to fix every finding or working through findings by severity score alone.

Also known as:

risk-based remediation, risk-based patch management

RBVM vs Traditional Vulnerability Management

Traditional programs often set SLAs by CVSS band, such as fixing every critical within a set number of days, and measure success by how many findings were closed. RBVM accepts that no team can fix everything. It asks which vulnerabilities are most likely to be exploited in this environment and which would cause the most harm, then puts effort there first.

Core Components of RBVM

  • Complete asset and code inventory. You cannot weigh risk for systems you do not know about.
  • Threat intelligence. Signals such as EPSS scores and the CISA KEV catalog show what attackers are targeting.
  • Exploitability and reachability. Evidence about whether a finding can actually be exploited where it lives.
  • Business context. Asset criticality, data sensitivity and internet exposure.
  • Risk-based SLAs and metrics. Deadlines and reporting tied to risk, such as MTTR for exploitable findings, instead of raw counts.

Why Teams Adopt RBVM

As the number of published CVEs and scanner findings keeps growing, fixing by severity alone produces backlogs that never shrink. NIST frames patching as preventive maintenance and recommends an enterprise strategy that prioritizes patches to reduce risk. RBVM applies the same idea to every type of finding, from dependencies to custom code.

Common Pitfalls

  • Risk scores without evidence. A blended score is only as good as its inputs, and opaque scores are hard for developers to trust.
  • Prioritizing without fixing. A well-ranked list still needs owners, fixes and follow-through to reduce risk.
  • Ignoring the long tail. Low-priority findings still need an explicit accept, defer or fix decision.

How Nullify Supports RBVM

Nullify scores every finding from 0 to 100 on severity, exploitability, reachability and business impact, moves actively exploited vulnerabilities up the backlog and reports MTTR, SLA compliance and campaign progress by team. It then drives remediation itself, with build-validated fixes routed to code owners and escalations in Slack when work stalls. See how Nullify runs the security program.

Key Takeaways

  • RBVM directs remediation by real-world risk instead of fixing everything or going by CVSS alone.
  • It combines inventory, threat intelligence, exploitability and business context.
  • SLAs and metrics should follow risk, not raw finding counts.
  • Ranking findings is only half the job; RBVM still needs fixes that get merged.
