What Is
Business Logic Flaw
?

A business logic flaw is a vulnerability in how an application's workflows and rules are designed, such as skipping a payment step or reading another customer's records, rather than in a specific unsafe function. Signature-based scanners rarely detect them.

Also known as:

business logic vulnerability, logic flaw

Examples of Business Logic Flaws

  • Broken object level authorization. Changing an ID in an API request returns another user's data.
  • Workflow bypass. Calling a later step directly, such as order confirmation, without completing payment.
  • Privilege escalation. A regular user reaches an admin action because the check only happens in the UI.
  • Limit abuse. Reusing a single-use coupon or exceeding a quota by sending requests in parallel.

Why Scanners Miss Business Logic Flaws

Traditional static analysis looks for known dangerous patterns, such as unsanitized input reaching a database query. Logic flaws usually involve code that is perfectly safe in isolation. The problem is a missing check or a wrong assumption about who is allowed to do what, which only shows up when you understand the application's intended behavior.

That is why access control failures sit at the top of both the OWASP Top 10 and the OWASP API Security Top 10, and why MITRE tracks business logic errors as their own category.

How to Find Business Logic Flaws

  • Map the authorization model first: who owns which objects, and which roles can perform which actions.
  • Test each sensitive action as a different user, an unauthenticated user and a lower-privileged role.
  • Call workflow steps out of order and in parallel.
  • Use analysis that reasons about application behavior, not just signatures.

How Nullify Finds Business Logic Flaws

Nullify's code security analysis traces untrusted input from entry points to sensitive operations and reasons about how the application actually works, so it can flag business logic flaws, IDOR and privilege escalation that signature-based SAST misses. Findings are validated on reachability, exploitability and business context before a human sees them. See how Nullify finds what signature-based SAST misses.

Key Takeaways

  • Business logic flaws come from missing checks or wrong assumptions, not unsafe functions.
  • Broken access control is the most common and most damaging form.
  • Signature-based scanners rarely catch them because the code looks safe in isolation.
  • Finding them starts with mapping who should be allowed to do what.
