What Is AI Guardrails?
AI guardrails are the rules and technical controls that limit what an AI system may do, such as which actions it can take, which data it can reach and what happens when it is uncertain, so it stays safe when running without a person watching every step.
Also known as:
Types of AI Guardrails
- Action limits. Which actions the system may take on its own, which need approval and which are blocked entirely.
- Permission scoping. Giving an agent only the tools and access the task needs, and nothing more.
- Input and output checks. Validating what goes into the model and what comes out before anything acts on it.
- Failure rules. What the system does when it is unsure, over budget or hits an error.
- Rate and volume caps. Limits on how much the system can change at once, so a bad decision cannot spread widely.
Why Guardrails Matter for Agents
A chatbot that gives a wrong answer produces a bad reply. An agent that gives a wrong answer can delete data, dismiss a real vulnerability or open a broken pull request. OWASP lists excessive agency as a top risk for LLM applications, and traces it to too much functionality, too many permissions or too much autonomy.
Designing a Failure Contract
The most important guardrail is often what happens when the model is not sure. In security triage, a wrong deferral costs some compute, while a wrong dismissal hides a real vulnerability. A safe design lets the model close a finding only when it can point to positive evidence, and sends everything else forward unchanged.
Guardrails Need Testing Too
Guardrails can drift as models, prompts and tools change. They should be covered by the same evaluations as the rest of the system, and any automated decision should leave a record that explains why it was made.
How Nullify Uses Guardrails
Nullify only dismisses findings with evidence, and never auto-merges: humans approve every merge. A configurable autonomy policy, team ground rules and blocked action types control PR creation, ticket filing, messaging and reviewer assignment, and open fix PRs are capped at three per repository. See how Nullify keeps automation in your control.
Key Takeaways
- AI guardrails limit what an AI system may do, reach and change.
- Agents need stronger guardrails than chatbots because their mistakes become actions.
- Decide what happens when the model is unsure before deciding anything else.
- Guardrails need evaluation and audit trails like any other control.
